IMA World first 50 years
WASHINGTON, DC - The earthquake of Haiti on January 12, Rick Santos, president and CEO of IMA IMA World and two of his colleagues were taken prisoner under the rubble of Hotel Montana in the mountains above Port-au-Prince within two days. They were not sure they will do it. You can hear Mr. Santos you describe the experience in this.Last night I heard Mr. Santos said his terrible experiences in the context of a greater tragedy in Haiti, much happier environment - the 50 th Anniversary IMA in a solemn ceremony in the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington that focuses on Haiti (IMA also works in Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and Togo). The organization was founded as the Interchurch Medical Assistance in New York in 1960, six organizations of the Church with a mission to procure and distribute medicines and supplies to clinics in developing countries. In 1993 he developed IMA Medicine Box ®, 70-pound box of essential medical items. Medicine box - usually, aspirin, food additives, antibiotics and first aid items - has been developed for the treatment of common diseases in 1000 for 2-3 months, if placed in a rural clinic.Medicine box converted to a model IMA, paying particular attention to both products and services, not just supply. After starting the medicine box is intended for the treatment of IMA programs for onchocerciasis (river blindness) in Tanzania through the distribution of Mectizan. This program led to the creation of the first field IMA office in Tanzania in 1997, Representative Charles Frantzen, IMA is the first country.Last night was the social and retail TOMS shoes at night with the announcement that it will donate 500,000 pairs of shoes in the IMA in the next six months for children in Haiti as part of a medicament for the treatment and prevention of intestinal worms. TOMS was founded in 2006 with the mission of each pair of shoes with a pair of new shoes, bought for a child in need basis, and has just received its millionth pair of shoes.Paul Weisenfeld, Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development and, until recently, the coordinator of USAID Haiti Task Force, said the sad truth that there are still 1 million homeless in Haiti, a country of 9 million €. And the biggest obstacle to the resettlement of the wreckage. He said 1.2 million cubic meters have already been eliminated, but much more, and he will be with us for some time. "But the news is not all bad: In a recent study of housing in Port-au-Prince, it was found that half of it structurally sound. And for inexplicable reasons, the incidence of water-borne diseases is reduced by the fact that he was far from an earthquake levels.Ceremonies of the 50 th anniversary was Gary Tuchman, CNN correspondent, national, many of the great stories of recent years, including the earthquake in Haiti, where he had been in Haiti five times this year. Tuchman is a big fan of the IMA, said that he rescue, when he was "only a journalist."IMA World is a member of the Global Health Council, as well as four of the five sponsors of the event - Abbott, BD, Johnson & Johnson and Vestergaard Frandsen. The Council is proud to be a member of IMA, and invites Mr. Santos and his colleagues our best wishes for the second 50 years.
